About Guta
Anesthetizing patients who can’t tell you where it hurts.
Guta Adami has been a veterinarian for almost 20 years, dedicated to anesthesia for wildlife and exotic animals in clinics, zoos and conservation projects.
It all started during an internship at the São Paulo Zoo, watching a brown bear being anesthetized.
My story
I always wanted to be a vet. As a child I loved every animal, but wild animals fascinated me most: I watched documentaries and wanted to understand them better. I started vet school knowing I wanted to work with wild animals, so I took every course and went to every talk I could on the subject.
Early in my degree, I landed an internship at the São Paulo Zoo. I knew almost nothing. One day there was a brown bear being anesthetized, and I fell in love: it was amazing to see so many tests done on such a dangerous animal, thanks to anesthesia and to the incredible anesthetist in charge, who a few semesters later became my advisor.
That day changed my life. I went through the rest of my degree knowing I wanted to be an anesthesiologist for wild animals, both native wildlife and exotics, and I grew more and more fascinated by what makes each species unique: anatomy, physiology, behavior and clinical care.
What drives me today, almost 20 years after graduating, is reducing animals’ stress and pain, giving peace of mind to the professionals who need to run exams and surgeries on so many different species, and teaching my students how to anesthetize wildlife and exotic animals.
“People say they like working with me because I’m calm, and that calm spreads to the room. I think the animals feel it too.”
